THE 5 MOST WOKE SHOWS RN

2 weeks ago | BY Huma Hazarika Sharma

Get inspired & kicking

Given the state-of-affairs ’round the globe in a world post Trump as POTUS, staying woke is more than just an incorrect usage of the verb for ‘wake’, and is no longer looked down upon as being pretentious either. Mainstream media always has its own agendas and political leanings, so when it comes to talking ’bout issues that count and getting the truth out there, we are all increasingly looking towards shows (which until a few years ago were solely about entertainment), to take on the mantle of holding a mirror up to society and breaking stereotypes one episode at a time. We’ve rounded up 5 of the most ‘woke’ ones out there right now.

THE HEATHERS
holding1
The remake of the cult High School classic released to mixed reviews, and was almost cancelled, but is thankfully going to be back again soon. Woke in a lot of ways, but in this case, it’s a double-edged sword really ‘cos while the lead Heather C calls out other kids for body-shaming and racism, she does kind of say things that make us want to call her out on her hypocrisy too – but I guess that’s pretty much an apt depiction of the world today, no?

NOW APOCALYPSE
holding2
An eerie reminder of things to come IRL if Senator Ocasio-Cortez is right, ‘Now Apocalypse’, centers around protagonist Ulysses and his crew, and the weird apocalyptic dreams that begin to hound him. Whether these are just THC-fuelled, or a sign of things to come, your guess is as good as ours.

GOOD TROUBLE
holding3
The spin-off of The Fosters, the show follows foster sisters Callie & Mariana Adams Foster as they navigate adulthood in the City of Angels, and stand up to real-world issues like a-hole bullies at work to sexism at the workplace and outside.

BROAD CITY
holding4
The trials & tribulations of BFFs and flatmates Ilana Wexler and Abbi Abrams, the fifth (and final) season of ‘Broad City‘ is airing this year (sob sob!!). The crazy antics of the protagonists and the light they and their equally cray castmates shed on everything from politics, religion, female sexuality, dysmorphia, religion and more had us in stitches every time (except the season finale of Season 4 of course).

PATRIOT ACT with HASAN MINHAJ
holding5
We all heard of the recent controversy ’round his comments on  a certain ‘chaiwala’, but thankfully it passed over. Minhaj’s ingenious idea of ‘exposing’ real-world villains like Trump, pharma companies, Trump, the Saudis, Trump, oil companies, Trump (you get our drift) through stand-up comedy has found total #fangirls in us.
