DIWALI 2018 GIFT GUIDE

1 month ago | BY Huma Hazarika Sharma

The A-to-Z of festive gifting

With Diwali right ’round the corner, it’s time to check those gifts off your shopping lists our lovelies. We’ve found you gifts perfect for everyone from your mum to your boss, your soon-to-be fiancee and your employees.

FOR YOUR BOSS
Buying for your boss can always be a tad tricky, you don’t want to go overboard, but don’t want to come across too cheap either. Your choice of gift+budget depends an awful lot on the line of work you’re into – if you’re Ms./Mr. Fancypants at a multinational, an arty rug that’s tasteful and a tad pricey would help you win some major brownie points.
If your job is more creative though, you can take your pick of quirky home decor which is always a safe bet.
1

FOR THE ARTY GF
Nothing will say you love her like a lamp that says L.O.V.E. (lol, cheesy we know!), but believe us you, it’ll work. Or, you can show her you notice the lil things ’round her place, and if she’s someone big on nature or animals, you can always get her a cute lil birdie wind chimes instead for her garden.

FOR MUM
For most of us our mum’s always stir memories of delish home-cooked food that they’d stuff down our throats growing up, so an arty wooden spice box only makes sense and shows her how much you’re thinking of her.
Or, you can always get her a chic set of ceramic plates to serve up all that food-goodness on.

FOR BAE’S BACHELOR PAD
Most men are pretty clueless when it comes to decor, and most bachelor pads are usually just a bed, a sofa, the telly, his scotch and the odd bit of crockery+cutlery. As much as they hate us mollycoddling them, getting ‘em something you know they need usually goes down a lot smoother when there’s an occasion attached to it.
A rug that looks like a footie field will be perfect for someone who’s on the easy side of 25, or if he’s slightly older, a floor lamp would be the perfect grown-up addition to his home, and as much as he might protest, he’ll secretly be thanking you for it.

FOR DAD
Dad’s are always notoriously hard to buy for, aren’t they? So, we say apart from buying him a bottle of the finest scotch you can find, you can always give him something a lil more personal like an apron if he likes to cook, or if he’s more a decor man, a cluster of ceiling lamps for his study is something he’d love too.

FOR YOUR BESTIE’S NEWBORN
There’s no better way to instill good values in kids (your own or your nieces+nephews) than to teach ‘em to love nature and animals from an early age. So, a pink sheep blankie is the perfect way to do just that and ensure your Goddaughter feels wrapped up in love always.
And if it’s a boy, a green Dino blankie will keep your Godson safe and secure and wrapped up in lots of love from his fav aunt or uncle.

FOR THE GRANS
Grandparents will always be the parents we never knew we had, and no gift is good enough for 2 people who’ve played such a major role in shaping you, no? So, as much as they might crib about us wasting our hard-earned money on them, there’s no way they’d say no to something with religious sentiment behind it like a Ganesha incense burner, or you can always buy ‘em a chic Corelle dinner set ‘cos you know how much grannies love collecting pretty flatware.

FOR THE WIFEY
The wifey’s always all about the fam, and she’ll always love the thought behind a gift more than anything else, and a chic collection of photo frames with pictures of the kids, you, her and the doggos in it is something she’ll be touched by even months down the line.
Or, a lamp to set the mood on days you surprise her with a date night at home, would make her pretty darn happy too.

FOR YOUR KIDS
It usually doesn’t take too much to get the kids excited ’bout anything new, so as long as you know their lil preferences (like your girl likes brightly-coloured stuff, and your son is big on cars, or vice-versa). A bright pretty rug and a decal with cars should pretty much help bowl ‘em over, and you can even set it up in advance, so they can be totally taken aback in a good way when they chance upon it.

FOR YOUR BESTIE’S STARTER PAD
We’ve all been there, back when we were getting our ‘starter’ pads ‘started’ ya know? And, there’s no better housewarming gift (or on any other occasion for the first year at least) that would be more appreciated than something that would fit right in in his or her new home.
10
LOVE THY NEIGHBOURS
If Seth Rogen’s ‘Bad Neighbours’ taught us anything, it’s that bad neighbours can totally wreck the experience of living even in the most beautiful home. And there’s no better way to keep the peace than to let them know you appreciate ‘em every once in a while.
12
FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES
Diwali’s all about bringing home Ganesha (good luck) & Lakshmi (prosperity), and we are willing to bet your employees will like a fanc-ey flower vase and a Ganesha statuette to go with over an impersonal box of sweets or a set of cheap glass glasses (we’ve all been at the receiving end of such gifts, no?).
